In addition to teaching, Grant plays guitar and sings for local band Tattooed Grin, and plays bass for the Phoenix, Arizona band Atoms Fall.
For Grant, the connections with the community of musicians is the best part of the job. “My favorite part is just the connections with the various people,” he says. “I’m teaching all ages. The interactions with the other teachers are magnificent and they’re all super talented. I feel like I’m learning from them every day. Some students, I feel like I learn from them as much as they learn from me. At the end of the day, some of the most important things in life are the connections you make on this journey and the connections I’ve made just since May alone have been really uplifting and just life-changing.”
For musicians just getting into an instrument, Grant has one piece of advice. “Practice,” he says. “The thing about practice is, if it sounds good, you’re not practicing. You’re trying to challenge yourself, so don’t get frustrated, don’t give up, just keep going. Eventually, and you might not feel it or think it, but you’re going to get better, even if it’s just a little bit a day. Just practice.” |
