NEWS AND UPDATES

Silversound Family,

Our rock band and jam classes are growing by leaps and bounds. Thanks to everyone who is taking part in this fun opportunity to put the skills you’re learning with your instructor into practice with other musicians in a live setting. We have a wide variety of jam classes, for students of all ages and skill levels. If you’re interested in taking part in a jam class, please speak with your instructor or the front desk. Jam classes aren’t the only opportunity for live performances here at Silversound. This month we’ve got recitals scheduled on Saturday, August 19 for younger students and Saturday, August 26 for adult students. We will also be recording these performances for any friends or family members who can’t make it. If you have any questions, please reach out to your instructor.

We’ve got some exciting Silversound Spotlight sessions coming up that will look at the music community as a whole, with advice on navigating record labels to the experience of running a music store, and much more.

Meet Grant Thomas Higgins!

Grant Thomas Higgins is one of Silversound Guitar’s newest instructors. Grant is available for lessons on bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, songwriting, production, performance, band consultations, and recording. Grant’s love of music started early. “I was obsessed with Michael Jackson for, like most of my childhood,” he says. “When I saw La Bamba, it was like game over. I needed a guitar. My parents got me some toy guitars when I was young. I got my first real guitar when I was like 11 or 12 and I just never looked back and have been doing music consistently.”
grantIn addition to teaching, Grant plays guitar and sings for local band Tattooed Grin, and plays bass for the Phoenix, Arizona band Atoms Fall.

For Grant, the connections with the community of musicians is the best part of the job. “My favorite part is just the connections with the various people,” he says. “I’m teaching all ages. The interactions with the other teachers are magnificent and they’re all super talented. I feel like I’m learning from them every day. Some students, I feel like I learn from them as much as they learn from me. At the end of the day, some of the most important things in life are the connections you make on this journey and the connections I’ve made just since May alone have been really uplifting and just life-changing.”

For musicians just getting into an instrument, Grant has one piece of advice. “Practice,” he says. “The thing about practice is, if it sounds good, you’re not practicing. You’re trying to challenge yourself, so don’t get frustrated, don’t give up, just keep going. Eventually, and you might not feel it or think it, but you’re going to get better, even if it’s just a little bit a day. Just practice.”
